When Mandrake reported earlier this month that Sarah Maple, the
fashionable young artist, included a painting depicting a Muslim woman
cradling a pig in her latest exhibition, she was condemned by the
Muslim Association of Britain. The organisation stressed that it was
opposed to violence, but, sadly, others have taken a different view.
Samir Ceric, the director of the SaLon Gallery, in Notting Hill, west
London, which is holding the exhibition, tells me that it has been
subjected to a campaign of violence and intimidation, culminating in
its glass frontage being smashed. "This criminal behaviour is a
manifestation of cowardice and lack of openness to engage in a
dialogue," he says. "It is also an attempt to impede the freedom of
expression to which all citizens of the UK are entitled."
After a string of menacing emails and anonymous telephone calls, a
woman wearing a burka visited the gallery earlier this week and
threatened staff. The vandalism took place on Tuesday and was recorded
on CCTV. The gallery now has 24-hour police protection.
Sarah, 23, who is Muslim, says: "The Islamic-themed pieces I've done
were about integrating eastern and western cultures and questioning
whether we can successfully combine the two, or whether we need a bit
more understanding." |

A bit more understanding? The functioning
of the jihadis and sympathisers is on the
two-year-old level. |

Not to mention enhancing her profile by producing images calculated to cause
offence. I wonder what the reaction would be if an "artist" decided to
express themselves by goose-stepping past the Western Wall in an
Einsatzkommando uniform.

Controversial expression is a legitimate function of art.
The exhibition was in an art gallery. A place where controversial
expression can be expected.
If religious nut jobs get upset about it, well hard fucking luck,
they'll have to stay upset.
If the ignorant savages who threatened violence and carried out acts
of vandalism are caught they should face stiff punishment.
Free speech needs protecting from thugs like that.
