will be unfamiliar with the prison lingo
When you clean the floor with a toothbrush
When you spend a lifetime licking boots,
licking toilets clean when they won't flush
you won't care who or how many you shoot
It is so far beyond hopeless, it is beyond description
except for the peristence of Life's uncanny quirks
The hated, the spat-on, the God-abandoned

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, the shipyard owner,

supervising the demolition, told The Patriot Ledger of Quincy:

warning, a connection of one leg to the body seemed to fail."
Workers had been dismantling the 25-story crane known as Goliath

World War II weapons makers deem icebergs as the ideal medium

weapons project. It all started with an innocent letter from
Albert Einstein to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1939,

POET'S POSTSCRIPT
There was a different poem that I had worked on, for more
than a week, partly having to do with the last crane
collapse in Texas. Then came the new crane collapse
of "Goliath" in Quincy, Mass. Had to put everything
aside for a minute. Unexpected priority interrrupt.
Quincy is a stone's throw (no pun intended)
(well, yes, actually it is) from where I live.
It would be a long walk, but I could do it.
Not like the more-distant lands of Texas and Florida.
For people not from Boston, that is "QUIN-ZEE",
not "KWIN-see" like the pear-shaped fruit.
They say things funny, here, but you get used to it.
Gay-sounding name, isn't it? Like "Little Lord Fauntleroy"-
"Quincy, your momma's calling you! Quincy! Come here,
this minute!". Poor kid. He will probably grow up bitter,
with unresolved issues, because of the hate and
homophobia.
Too bad. Probably shouldn't tease them- they might
change the name of the city, like "Gay Head".
Too bad to see a once sea-faring place like Boston lose
its ship-building industry.
Supposedly, so I've heard, my father's side of
the family traces to ship-builders in northern Germany.
Mother's side traces to Ukraine, in the Carpathian
mountains, near the Romania/Transylvania border.
I had read an article about "Goliath" getting shipped
away- I thought somehow it was supposed to be to Borat's
glorious nation of Kazakhstan. Not sure if I got the
wires crossed, or the article had been wrong. I thought
to myself, "That one would certainly make good poetry,
if it collapsed."
Good poetry- well, that is merely personal taste, but
"good opportunity" would be nearly indisputable, for
someone who has spent months writing poems about
industrial cranes.
I don't doubt that the fellow who died was a nice fellow.
For people who are religious, and manage to think that
every human tragedy must serve some good purpose, under
God's magnificent plan, I don't know why this one should
be any different, just because there is a gay man who is
trying to talk to you, and reveal to you what that
good purpose might be.
Sometimes I think- I should leave it alone, just not
bother, but then I think- the fellow's dead, anyway.
Not writing a poem isn't going to bring him back.
But more than that, as incredible as it might seem to
you, I think that there really *might* be a rhyme
and reason to why this happened. Rhymes anyway, even
if not very polished ones.
As my usual disclaimer- I was barely aware that this
crane even existed- I saw an article, it glimpsed my
mind for minute, then I forgot all about it. Whatever
mental and spiritual churning goes on, is below the
conscious level.
It *might* be mere coincidence. In perspective, this
was third death in 3 years, involving cranes at that
shipyard. There have been some 26 crane incidents in
Texas. Perhaps you just don't notice crane incidents,
until someone starts writing poetry about it.
Maybe.
If I were not being completely honest, I wouldn't need
to bother to inform you of that fact. It is kind of
funny- people might think that *I* have something to hide,
but it is just the other way around. Just about everybody
has something to hide, except me and Dr. Mary's Monkey.
Our government is hiding genocide against gays.
The media is hiding genocide against gays.
Nothing less.
You, my friend, if you are not among the tiny handful
of people who know better, you are among the legions
of Good Germans who ought to know better, but don't,
because they don't care to know.
Where there is not genocidal hate in America, there
is genocidal indifference. There is hardly such a
thing as an innocent person, in a country that routinely
elects warmongers and bigots to the highest offices.
Americans will *never* forget 3000 people who died
on Sept 11, but the fact of 150,000 innocent civilians
who died in a self-interested war, justified on made-up
reasons, hardly even registers in the minds of a
self-loving American people who think that they
are the Greatest. And *they* want to preach to *me*
about "narcissism" or "lacking empathy"?
It is a world upside-down. I am sure that the Religious
Right would also like to portray itself as a brave
David, standing up the big, powerful gay Goliath.
All the more upside-down. A small reality check-
the property holdings of the Catholic Church, in Boston
alone, probably dwarf the collected financial worth
of the most of the gay-rights organizations in the
country. In terms of who is powerful and who is powerless,
I think that it is quite clear who "David" would be.
I learned recently that a speaker at an anti-gay marriage
rally, at Boston's Tremont Temple Baptist Church,
had been casually talking about capital punishment
for gays, as if that were merely historical context to
highlight why gay people are so undeserving. He justified
capital punishment, by citing the Bible.
Not even Bay Windows, Boston's largest gay paper,
managed to mention this detail. They mentioned the
talk about "sodomites" and "abominations" and "vile
affections", yet "capital punishment" seem strangely
off their radar.
Why? Do they not realize that "capital punishment"
is referring to *death*, which is indeed the ugly
legacy of Massachusetts and the United States,
in terms of the historical mistreatment of gays?
Do not even gay people have the sense to realize
that *death* is a more significant subject than
mere name-calling?
Mitt Romney, then Governor of the State, and Presidential
candidate was there. All he could do was gush praise,
"What a crowd!"
I repeat- you would never know it, based on the non-reaction,
but whether anyone, even gays, realize it or not,
that is serious enough that anyone and everyone can die,
if it isn't addressed. To fix a problem that deep,
it is hard to imagine anything that could be effective,
without it involving a great many people dying.
In my heart, I would raze the entire city to the ground,
raze the entire country to the ground, if people did
not wake up and realize that such things *must* be
talked about, and *must* be broadly condemned.
It is most certainly not OK to try to be respectful,
good friends to everyone, including genocide-mongering
religious crackpots who are busily vilifying a minority.
To sweep it under the rug and ignore it, is only *more*
provocative, to the small numbers of people who manage
to see the entire picture in a sensible perspective
and sense of proportion.
The smug powers-that-be will completely blow you off,
if you protest that certain attitudes are throwing
down a gauntlet, and representing an act of war.
They couldn't care how true it is, how justified
is your rage. If they don't think that you can
make war, if you aren't anyone famous or powerful,
they cynically, simply ignore you.
Wouldn't it be almost a delicious irony from the
mind of God, Herself, to have the powers-that-be
wake up, against their own resistance, to the
creeping realization that maybe all the talk of
"war" actually *might* be real? That they actually
have to *deal* with these little nobodies, and can't
simply crush them, as they are accustomed to doing?
Almost any workable concept of God would probably
have to embrace such things, every now and then.
I do not dabble in black arts. I am perfectly serious,
though, when I speculate that whatever is happening
here is probably related to the legends that we have
about things like witchcraft, or for that matter,
"prayer".
I have a news magazine, with an article about quantum
physics, that I have not yet read. Its title says
something to the effect, "Do our minds create reality
by looking at it?"
They are not talking about vivid imagination. They
mean exactly what they say. Somehow, consciousness
surfs the cosmic soup of infinite possibilities, and
crystals one that comes into view, which seems like
our only world. We just aren't seeing the rest
of Infinity.
It makes much more sense that "God" should be
a principle than a sentient entity. If a watch
needs a Watchmaker, then a Watchmaker would need
a Super-Watchmaker, because a Watchmaker is more
complex than the watch, itself, and cannot exist
simply ex-nihilo. To imagine otherwise does
not answer any riddles- it compounds them.
What we mean by "God", really, is "Infinity", but
I believe that Infinity does not have any inherent
moral principles, other than in small, isolated
corners of Infinity. Those might be entire,
smaller-scale infinities, unto themselves, but
smaller-scale in the Grand Scheme, nonetheless.
I consider many other possibilities, but that
is my leader contender- that consciousness alone
can steer events.
I might also be mind-controlled by hypnosis
and being "assisted" by rogue intelligence figures
who have the power to do such things. Maybe not
"rogue" so much as righteously rebelling against the
world of corruption that they understand themselves
to exist.
Maybe I am Devil-possessed, and all that nonsense
is true. If I really thought that it were, I would
cease to do it. I highly doubt it, though. After
all, the real killers of this world are the ones
in the White House, the Pentagon, the CIA, etc.
By "killers" I do not mean merely the Iraq war.
I mean political killings, bodies dumped, covert
acts of genocide, all off the the radar of a
self-interested media and public.
I used to think that "fascism" was merely a case
of a dictator or small clique of leaders acting brutally,
in a suppressed country. I've come to appreciate that
fascism can be the diseased *culture* of an entire
country and its people. I see it Russia. I see it
in America.
Maybe the events are only coincidence, but I
highly doubt that, also. The only thing that I
can say for certain is I have no other literal
involvement, than blind-sight and poetry.
If you doubt it, please hang on to your hats-
we are a long way from done.
I am going to take you on a wild roller-coaster ride.
