Contrary to misinformation, Democrats have not controlled the Senate
for two years. They have 49 seats, and Republicans have 49 seats. And
through most of the last session, Democrats only had 48 seats, because
Tim Johnson was in the hospital. Republicans have successfully
filibustered almost 200 bills/amendments thus far, and Senate
Democrats can't get anything passed.
It should be noted that when I pointed out that Republicans having
more than half the senators didn't mean they could just do what
they wanted because they didn't have enough to force cloture, I was
told it was still the Republicans fault. So while I agree that the
Democrats didn't have enough votes to force things to a floor vote,
neither have Republicans. I think never not once going back at
least to the 1994 Republican Revolution. Isn't that true?

I can agree that no one actually has "control" as far as the number of
votes. That's why I said, it depends on your definition of "control."
With one definition, Democrats can be said to have nominal control on
one level. Change the definition, and Independents give Democrats the
effective majority. Change it again, and one can say that no one has
effective control.

So why didn't they instead ask if its true that Dems
controlled the House and were tied in the Senate (but two of
the Senators caucused with the Dems)?
I'd answer no to the first question as posed, and yes to the
