Obama, Rush Limbaugh and Fox News: A Look at Media in 2009

by Josh Silver

Ask just about any public interest advocate concerned about the dismal
state
of media and journalism, and they will tell you that Obama's media policy
platform is excellent: the beginning of what could be the most public
interest friendly administration in presidential history. Part of this
optimism stems from Obama's understanding that Internet and technology
are
the cornerstone of a 21st century economy and society. Another part comes
from the competence and integrity of the media and telecom advisors
working
on his transition team. And another comes from his direct experience.

This is a great article that makes several cogent points. I would also
like to see the Fairness Doctrine reinstated. This would curtail some of
the right wing demagoguery on Talk Radio.

What bothered me more about the fairness act's demise by Reagan was it
allowed huge corporations to suck up thousands of ma & pa stations and dump
their brand on America, totally, like Clearchannel.

on the licensed public air.. It expands freedom of speech it does not
reduce

believe in "freedom of speech" as long as it is THEIR speech. but the
vehemently oppose anybody countering their views or challenging them.

Ownership also has to be broken up so that other broadcasters have an
opportunity to access the public air. Its ludicrous for one company to own
1600 radio stations.

And this is necessary if we are to continue to be a Democracy or a
Theocracy.

the voices of those you disagree with.

That is what is currently being done by the rightwing bobbleheads. The
Fairness Doctrine wouldn't quash anything -- it would allow both sides of
issues to be presented.

Another problem was the LPFM Act in 2003 which allowed the 'little' people
Low powered localized radio stations. Almost immediately thousands of new
licensees were selling their cheap stations to religious fanatics for
thousands of dollars with instructions on how to raise the low power with an
FCC construction permit.
We had a low power tv station pop up on channel 26 and would run movies
24/7.
Two years later it was "bankrupt" and within months some craxkpot from
Oklahoma sucked it up. Now it's called "Family TV" and it's nothing but
garbage.

Prove your premise. Otherwise, all you have is an opinion.

-----------------
Please explain to the class how presenting the other side of an issue will
"quash the voices of those you disagree with". Maybe you are afraid people
will say, "Oh, I see. So Rush wasn't really giving us the whole story, that
makes more sense now."

It's a bit more complex than that.

Let's say I own a radio station, and you get the "Fairness
Doctrine" reinstated. Now, every time I air something
even slightly controversial, I have to worry about being
fined unless I give free air time to an opposing view.
And what if there isn't anyone available to give an
opposing view, or you listen to the opposing view
I presented and decide it isn't oppositional enough?

What will happen is that radio station owners will
decline to air things that upset you...which I'm sure
you're fine with, what with the mainstream media
acting as the 24/7 volunteer PR department for
your heroes.

I think if you look closely at your television set, you'll
see controls that allow you to choose channels other
than 26. If enough people do so, then what you see
as their "garbage" will go off the air and someone else
will try something else on that channel. If it doesn't
go off the air because you didn't watch it, then maybe
that means some of your fellow citizens want to watch
it.

Wrong. Channels backed by wealthy religious organizations

Easy, put on shows with right and left co-hosts, they have them in
Canada and it makes for very entertaining radio
rather than a 3 hour one sided blast at one side or the other....

It is not sufficient for the fascists on the left
to own TV, the print press and news magazines.
They are driven to snuff out every source they
disagree with by whatever means. The Communists
in the old USSR did that and so did the Nazis.
Tyranny can only survive when the people are
lied to and coerced by fear.

Freedom of speech is being curtailed everyday by
political correctness, sensitivity training, and
leftists on university campuses who drown out
speech they disagree with.
