I am bewildered by the initial outraged reaction of Rep. Cynthia McKinney,
D-Ga., who was stopped by U.S. Capitol Police. If she did not have her
congressional pin and ignored requests to stop, she should have been
stopped at the U.S. Capitol ("Heights of Arrogance," Editorial,
Wednesday).
Any private citizen would have been stopped. Is McKinney not subject to
the procedures and laws in place to protect her and her colleagues? Her
claiming racism seemed unwarranted.
I doubt that McKinney is a threat to the security of our country, but,
even as an elected representative, she is not above abiding by the law. It
is the arrogance of politicians who appear to want to place themselves
above the law that causes them to lose the respect of the very people they
pledged to represent.

Once again Rep. Cynthia McKinney, D-Ga., embarrassed herself and the state
she represents with her outlandish accusations that the color of her skin,
not her aggressive hatred of a perceived white conspiracy in Washington
against her, is the reason for her recent problems.
She blatantly tried to use her race as an excuse for her poor judgment in
assaulting a U.S. Capitol Police officer, who, by news accounts, was
simply doing his job in a post-9/11 world. McKinney's claims that the
police officer's actions were a matter of racial discrimination were
simply a diversionary tactic to place the blame on someone other than
herself.
This only reinforces the mentality held by some African-Americans across
this country, who use perceived racial discrimination as an excuse to
justify their actions and place blame on white society for their misdeeds.
Cynthia McKinney should be charged and prosecuted to the fullest extent of
the law.
